The idea is they stabilise the electrical circuit by adding multiple ground points which supposedly makes the electrical systems more efficient, adding power due to less drain. Lots of arguments on the forums about whether they actually work or not but on an older cars where the main ground to the battery has become oxidised you might want to change that instead - £10 on a new larger core earth cable from Europa Spares will be a good start!

Upgrading the standard cable to bigger Copper cables is the way forward. 4awg or 0awg.
