I haven't turned it over since, waiting for the ECU to dry out.

Then I think it'll be plugs out, tip some isopropyl alcohol in, and turn it over.

Today I took the carpet out - still saturated, so the dehumidifier wasn't going to work.

Its back in the bare car now, and the carpets are drying out in the house.

So today I removed the plugs and turned the engine by hand to see if it's seized. It's not, it turns freely.

But no go when I try to turn it over with the starter - I hear the starter spin but not the engine.

It sounds as if the starter isn't engaging with the flywheel.

So I guess it's starter out to see what's happened!

Unless The Collective has any other ideas?

If the starter motor is spinning but not engaging with the flywheel, either the solenoid is knackered, or stuck. Take the starter motor off and check.

Hope you get this fixed :)
Like merc says give the starter a few taps with a hammer and try it again - if that doesnt work then unbolt it...

Well a mate/mechanic who knows ALL about the H22 came round, and interestingly today, the starter did turn the engine over!

My messing about yesterday must have freed up something.

Plugs back in, we turned the engine over several times, and finally she coughed into life, with clouds of smoke or steam from the exhaust. He reckoned the exhaust was full of water.

We kept it at high revs for a while to blow everything out, and until it would stay running on its own. Once it did, I left it running with the heater on full to dry everything out.

Now all seems to be fine!

Just to dry out the carpets and seats now, which are all arranged around the fire in the living room, and put it al back together!
